Most of the Slovaks left “Upper Hungary”, which is present-day Slovakia from the Eastern Slovak regions such as Šariš, Spiš and Zemplín.
It is estimated that before WW1 more than 500 000 Slovaks left “Stará vlasť” as they named the old homeland and traveled to “Nový svet” as they named America.
They arrived via Ellis Island and mostly settled down in Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Chicago, New Yersey and New York.
There were 3 emigration waves, the largest one was between 1880-1920.
On the other end, there was a land of the unlimited possibilities, working opportunities and great income – AMERICA.
