Only 15 min. away from Bratislava’s Old Town, lies a once-mighty fortress Devin Castle with its strategic position on a cliff above the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers.
It was settled by various cultures since Neolithic times, among them the Celts and Romans. The first written record comes from 1223 when it was seized by the Austrian Duke Friedrich II. In 1635, the ownership of Devin castle passed onto the Palfy family. Later, the castle lost its strategic purpose and fell into ruins. Its faith was sealed by Napoleon’s troops who blew it up in 1809.
By walking up to a museum at the top, you can enjoy views of flowing rivers and Austrian farmland.
You will thoroughly enjoy the views…and yes, the special Devin wine too.
We’ll also visit the place where the former Iron Curtain cut Slovakia off from Austria during the Communist era and give you a brief overview.
